EV Charger Won't Connect to WiFi? Here's How to Fix It

Updated January 2025 | 12 min read

Your smart EV charger promised app control, scheduling, and energy monitoring. Instead, you're staring at a blinking LED while the app shows "Device Offline." Sound familiar? This guide covers every WiFi connectivity issue we've seen across all major charger brands.

Quick Diagnosis: What's Your Symptom?

Initial Setup Won't Complete

If your charger has never successfully connected to WiFi, the issue is almost always one of these:

1. You're on a 5GHz Network

This is the #1 cause of setup failures. Nearly all EV chargers only support 2.4GHz WiFi—they cannot see or connect to 5GHz networks. Modern routers often broadcast both under the same network name, and your phone connects to 5GHz while the charger can only see 2.4GHz.

The Fix:

2. Special Characters in Network Name or Password

Some chargers struggle with special characters in WiFi credentials. If your password contains characters like @, #, $, %, or spaces, try temporarily simplifying it during setup.

3. Hidden Networks

If your SSID is hidden, you'll need to manually enter the network name during setup. Many charger apps handle this poorly. Consider temporarily unhiding your network for initial setup.

4. Distance from Router

2.4GHz has good range, but garages often have interference from metal doors, concrete walls, and electrical equipment. During initial setup, bring a portable router or hotspot closer to verify it's not a range issue.

Charger Was Working, Now Offline

If your charger connected successfully but now shows offline, try these in order:

Power Cycle Everything

  1. Turn off the charger's circuit breaker
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Restart your router (unplug for 30 seconds)
  4. Wait for router to fully boot (2-3 minutes)
  5. Turn charger breaker back on
  6. Wait 5 minutes before checking the app

Check for Router Changes

Did any of these happen recently?

If yes, you may need to reconfigure the charger's WiFi settings or run setup again.

Check Router's DHCP Lease

Some routers assign new IP addresses when devices reconnect, which can confuse older charger firmware. In your router settings:

Check for Manufacturer Server Outages

Smart chargers rely on cloud servers. If the manufacturer is having issues, your charger will show offline even though it's connected to WiFi. Check:

Intermittent Connectivity

Connection that comes and goes is usually a signal strength or interference issue.

Improve Signal Strength

Reduce Interference

2.4GHz is crowded. Common interference sources:

Try changing your router's 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 (non-overlapping channels). Use a WiFi analyzer app to find the least congested channel in your area.

Remote Access Not Working

If the charger works when you're home on the same WiFi but shows offline when you're away:

Check Cloud Connection

The charger connects to the manufacturer's cloud servers, which then relay commands from your app. This requires:

Firewall and Router Settings

Some router security features block IoT devices from reaching external servers:

Full Factory Reset

Each charger has a factory reset procedure that wipes all settings. Consult your manual, but it typically involves:

  1. Turning off power
  2. Holding a button while powering on
  3. Waiting for specific LED pattern
  4. Running setup from scratch

Firmware Recovery

Some chargers support firmware recovery via USB or Bluetooth when WiFi is completely broken. Contact manufacturer support for instructions specific to your model.

Warranty Replacement

If the WiFi module is truly defective, you may need a warranty replacement. Document all troubleshooting steps before contacting support—they'll ask about them.

Prevent Future Issues

Still Stuck?

If you've tried everything here and still can't connect:

  1. Contact manufacturer support with your troubleshooting log
  2. Post in the charger's community forum with specifics (charger model, router model, symptoms)
  3. Consider whether you actually need WiFi—most chargers work perfectly for basic charging without connectivity
